Review - 2 Guns
2 Guns has a very familiar feel to it but thanks to Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg the quality is there to make this action comedy stand head and shoulders above all the tired action comedies that are around nowadays.
The plot is double-cross galore and finds Robert 'Bobby' Trench (Washington) and Michael 'Stig' Stigman (Wahlberg) as a pair of bank-robbers who rob the wrong bank. Thinking they are stealing money from a drug cartel, they actually end up stealing money from the CIA. This is where the double-crossing comes into play as neither of them know that they are both working undercover, Trench for the DEA and Stigman for the Navy.
After they find out the truth about each other they must work together to get the money back, all while being hunted by both the DEA and the Navy.
One of the best things about 2 Guns is how it feels like an old-school action film. It is good to see a break in the current string of action films starring Jason Statham.
The best thing about 2 Guns though is its lead stars. Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are easily two of Hollywood's most likeable actors working today and they play off each other so well in 2 Guns. They are helped by a script from Blake Masters that is quick and sharp in its exchanges between the two.
Trench (Denzel Washington) & Stigman (Mark Wahlberg) |
They are not the only ones to show up and have some fun though. Bill Paxton is a delight as Earl, a member of the CIA, hunting down the money stolen by Trench and Stigman. His character is comically dark and loves to use Russian roulette as an interrogation method.
While 2 Guns was never going to be a game-changer in the action genre it is a welcome entry that gives audiences a break from seeing the same film over and over again. Don't expect the greatest film ever when you see 2 Guns, just enjoy the ride as there is plenty of fun to be had here.
