SEX TAPE
I went to see Sex Tape four days ago and it has taken me all this time to even want to think about the film long enough to write a review of it.
Hold on to your hats.
The film's tagline alone, which reads, 'A movie about a movie they don't want you to see', should serve as a subliminal message to any cinema goers who lay their eyes on the poster. That message is avoid this film at all costs. Sex Tape IS the movie that everyone involved shouldn't want you to see.
Sex Tape is a comedy starring Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz as Jay and Annie, a married couple who, since having kids, have seen their sex-life become non-existent. In a bid to spice up their sex-life, Jay and Annie decide to make a sex tape.
With the sex tape filmed on their iPad, it syncs with all the spare iPads that Jay has handed out to family and friends forcing the couple to gather all the iPads, before anybody sees their tape.
The word comedy is one that has to be used very lightly in the case of Sex Tape because, quite frankly, it is one of the worst comedies I have ever seen. Ludicrously unfunny and mind numbingly boring, Sex Tape is beyond saving. In fact, I would go as far as saying that never has a comedy failed to make me laugh as much.
One of the funniest jokes was to do with The Cloud and how it is so confusing but as usual that joke found its way into the trailer, so it had no comical effect when it was used in the film.
As well as being unfunny, Sex Tape has other major issues that make it an uncomfortable watch. The script is awful and the characters are so badly written that you just won't be able to feel any empathy towards them.
For example, Jay and Annie are so obsessed with their sex-life that their children end up having to play second fiddle to it. Somebody get social services on the phone and quick.
Just as bad are the performances given by the entire cast of Sex Tape. I have never been Jason Segel's biggest fan and I never thought I would see a performance of his I hated as much as in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, until I sat through Sex Tape.
Then there is Cameron Diaz. Just as unfunny as Segel, I decided to draw the line and gave up hope as soon as her character decided that she would do a line of cocaine with her boss. Pointless and a ridiculous attempt at getting a cheap laugh.
There is support from Rob Lowe as Annie's boss and Jack Black as the owner of YouPorn however, they are two of the worst supporting characters you could wish for so they just make the film that little bit worse.
Sex Tape is a lazy attempt at comedy that will have you suffering from beginning to end. I will have to put it in the same leagues of awfulness as Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2, and you know how much I hated those films.
