BARTON PREDICTS - THE 93rd ACADEMY AWARDS

Ladies and gentlemen, once again it's that time of year for the grandest film awards ceremony of them all when the 93rd Academy Awards take place in Los Angeles, just not as we are used to due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. The Academy were adamant that the ceremony wouldn't go ahead via Zoom, which has been a popular method amongst other ceremonies this awards season. With that potentially meaning a lot of nominees would miss out on collecting potential awards in person they finally decided to set up awards hubs that could house nominees safely without having to travel to the US, London being the prominent one with a number of Brits up for various awards.

It's been a strange year for film with cinemas shut for the majority of it all, many films only being released on to digital platforms for rental and not getting the usual theatrical run for us to witness in all their glory. It actually means I've seen a lot more of the nominees than I normally would have at this point, enabling me to predict a fair few more categories than ever before, only missing out the shorts and documenary feature this time. Let's get started then with the smaller categories before finishing with the big prize.... Best Picture.

Best International Feature Film

Nominees:
Another Round
Better Days
Collective
The Man Who Sold His Skin
Quo Vadis, Aida?

And the winner is...
An incredibly strong category this year but I can only see one winner, the much lauded Another Round. Thomas Vinterberg has a Best Director nomination to boot which puts the film in a very strong position, the film itself being one of the year's best.

Best Visual Effects

Nominees:
Love and Monsters
The Midnight Sky
Mulan
The One and Only Ivan
Tenet

And the winner is...
It's hard to look past Tenet for this one in all honesty, though I have a feeling Love and Monsters could be a dark horse which I would also be very happy with.

Best Costume Design

Nominees:
Emma
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Mank
Mulan
Pinocchio

And the winner is...
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom has this in the bag I feel with the costumes, particularly of Ma Rainey herself, being very on point. No shocks expected here.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Nominees:
Emma
Hillbilly Elegy
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Mank
Pinocchio

And the winner is...
Again, I don't expect a surprise in this category, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom completing the Makeup & Hair/Costume double with no problems.

Best Film Editing

Nominees:
The Father
Nomadland
Promising Young Woman
Sound of Metal
The Trial of the Chicago 7

And the winner is...
Could make a case for any of these winning so this is one of those up in the air on the evening but I think Sound of Metal will just about steal it.

Best Sound

Nominees:
Greyhound
Mank
News of the World
Soul
Sound of Metal

And the winner is...
Next question. If Sound of Metal doesn't win there's something majorly wrong here.

Best Production Design

Nominees:
The Father
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Mank
News of the World
Tenet

And the winner is...
Feel like this one is very much a forgone conclusion for Mank to pick up this award. Could this be the only award it picks up?

Best Animated Feature Film

Nominees:
Onward
Over the Moon
A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon
Soul
Wolfwalkers

And the winner is...
A two-way battle between Soul and Wolfwalkers for this award. I think the former will win another of these for Pixar but ballots may end up suggesting a closer race than you'd think. Remember, if Wolfwalkers doesn't win, it's still a great film, as is Soul

Best Cinematography

Nominees:
Judas and the Black Messiah
Mank
News of the World
Nomadland
The Trial of the Chicago 7

And the winner is...
Joshua James Richards brings Nomadland to life with such gorgeous visuals it's hard to see anyone else picking up this one. Mank may be its closest rival but it won't stop it.

Best Original Score

Nominees:
Da 5 Bloods
Mank
Minari
News of the World
Soul

And the winner is...
Another nailed on one in this award for Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste.

Best Original Song

Nominees:
"Fight For You" - Judas and the Black Messiah
"Hear My Voice" - The Trial of the Chicago 7
"Husavik" - Eurovision Song Contest
"Io Sí (Seen)" - The Life Ahead
"Speak Now" - One Night in Miami

And the winner is...
Absolutely criminal that Edgar's Prayer from Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar isn't walking away with this award, let alone be nominated. I'd love a cheeky win for Husavik here but this is going to Speak Now from One Night in Miami...

Best Adapted Screenplay

Nominees:
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
The Father
Nomadland
One Night in Miami
The White Tiger

And the winner is...
This is one I really want to see The Father win because it's such a profound and devastating watch that really makes me want to see the play. Does Borat have enough friends in the Academy to cause a storm here?

Best Original Screenplay

Nominees:
Judas and the Black Messiah
Minari
Promising Young Woman
Sound of Metal
The Trial of the Chicago 7

And the winner is...
Another very strong category that Aaron Sorkin usually thrives in however, this is going to Emeral Fennell this year for her work on Promising Young Woman.

Best Supporting Actor

Nominees:
Sacha Baron Cohen - The Trial of the Chicago 7
Daniel Kaluuya - Judas and the Black Messiah
Leslie Odem Jr. - One Night in Miami
Paul Raci - Sound of Metal
Lakeith Stanfield - Judas and the Black Messiah

And the winner is...
Don't be confused by this picture because Lakeith Stanfield is in it too. Daniel Kaluuya is walking away with this award, as he has been doing throughout this awards season.

Best Supporting Actress

Nominees:
Maria Bakalova - Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
Glenn Close - Hillbilly Elegy
Olivia Colman - The Father
Amanda Seyfried - Mank
Youn Yuh-Jung - Minari

And the winner is...
Part of me would love to see Maria Bakalova cause a major upset here but that's just not going to happen so watching Young Yuh-Jung win for Minari would be the next best thing. If her BAFTA speech is anything to go by, we could be in for another memorable moment at the Oscars.

Best Actor

Nominees:
Riz Ahmed - Sound of Metal
Chadwick Boseman - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Anthony Hopkins - The Father
Gary Oldman - Mank
Steven Yeun - Minari

And the winner is...
Sure to be the most emotional moment of the night, Chadwick Boseman posthumously winning Best Actor after his tragic death last year. You can't say he doesn't deserve it either with it being his finest performance and just good as others nominated.

Best Actress

Nominees:
Viola Davis - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Andra Day - The U.S. vs Billie Holiday
Vanessa Kirby - Pieces of a Woman
Frances McDormand - Nomadland
Carey Mulligan - Promising Young Woman

And the winner is...
Probably the hardest winner to call this year, Best Actress is an incredibly strong field with not one woman being out in front and sweeping up all the awards prior to the Oscars. In all honesty, each of them would be deserving of the award but I'm going to go with Carey Mulligan for her fearless dive into the revenge thriller Promising Young Woman

Best Director

Nominees:
Thomas Vinterberg - Another Round
David Fincher - Mank
Lee Isaac Chung - Minari
Chloé Zhao - Nomadland
Emerald Fennell - Promising Young Woman

And the winner is...
Chloé Zhao is going to win and Kevin Feige is definitely waiting to release the Eternals trailer until after the awards so he can include "Academy Award Winner Chloé Zhao" in it. Don't see any surprises here.

Best Picture

Nominees:
The Father
Judas and the Black Messiah
Mank
Minari
Nomadland
Promising Young Woman
Sound of Metal
The Trial of the Chicago 7

And the winner is...
The biggest award of the night and again don't expect any surprises here. Nomadland has been sweeping up Best Picture awards everywhere it goes and that won't change come Oscars Sunday. Massive shock in store if something else is announced from the envelope.
